NASA AIMS FOR SUNDAY LAUNCH OF SPACE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Space shuttle program managers met today for five and a half hours today to discuss options to deal with balky low-level liquid hydrogen engine cutoff sensors. Engineers worked throughout the day to devise a plausible flight rationale to enable Atlantis to launch during the December launch window while maintaining crew and mission safety. At the end of the day, NASA is cautiously optimistic about a launch attempt early next week, but a final decision on whether the shuttle is "go" for launch won't be made until tomorrow afternoon.

Launch of space shuttle Atlantis was postponed at least 24 hours today when two of four fuel sensors inside the external tank failed during routine prelaunch testing. "We're a little disappointed in the events today, but we are certainly working to resolve our issues and make an attempt as soon as we possibly can," said space shuttle Launch Director Doug Lyons following today's scrub.
